There is a great deal of confusion around cannabidiol and people regularly confuse cannabidiol with cannabis.

This article aims to explain the differences between the two.

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a chemical which is extracted from the cannabis plant. Each cannabis plant will contain in excess of 100 chemicals, also known as cannabinoids and CBD is one of them. The CBD is extracted from the plant by using a number of different chemical processes. We associate cannabis with the ‘high’ which comes from the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, this chemical is not the same as CBD, it is a completely different chemical which is also contained within the cannabis plant.

CBD is used for its health benefits and users will not experience the ‘high’ or any of the intoxicating effects associated with smoking or ingesting cannabis. It has a completely different effect on the body compared with cannabis and users have reported significant health benefits from using CBD. Research has backed the anecdotal claims and CBD has shown promise in the treatment or management of the following conditions, to name but a few,

  • Anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses
  • Skin conditions such as eczema
  • Seizures and epilepsy
  • Joint pain such as arthritis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Chronic pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Relief from cancer symptoms and from the side effects of cancer treatment
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Heart Disease and Blood Pressure disorders
  • Substance abuse issues

Our bodies contain a system known as the endocannabinoid system, most of us are less familiar with this system compared with other systems in the body. Our endocannabinoid system or ECS for short helps to ensure the proper functioning of our bodies by maintaining its equilibrium. Our ECS helps with everything from pain to sleep to inflammation. CBD is known to act on the receptors within the endocannabinoid system and can be extremely helpful in restoring balance to an out of balance system. THC also works on the ECS but does so in a different way compared with CBD. Since CBD has none of the mind altering effects and it can be taken legally, it is therefore the preferred solution.

CBD can be taken in a variety of ways and different users will prefer different methods, finding that some work better for them than another. CBD can be taken orally in the form of a capsule or tablet, it can be used sublingually when purchased as an oil, it can be used on aches and pains directly in the form of a cream or ointment, it can be smoked or ‘vaped’ or even used as a spray. There is a method to suit all different tastes. It also comes in different strengths and again it is for the user to determine which strength best suits their application.

People are now turning to CBD for many of their health needs and it is showing a lot of promise and providing users with much needed relief from a number of debilitating and painful conditions.
