We have some great news to share with you. On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) informed us that we have been selected from among hundreds of applicants to make a 5-minute formal presentation (with PowerPoint) at a hearing later this month! The purpose of the May 31 hearing is for the FDA to solicit input from stakeholders in order to inform their regulatory oversight of hemp-derived CBD products.
We are thrilled that we will have the opportunity to share our insights on behalf of our members. We see our selection as a sign that the federal government recognizes the stature of our members and sees them as leaders in this emerging industry.
Our testimony will educate FDA officials about the various state cannabis systems in which cannabis products (including hemp products) are being manufactured and sold safely and effectively in regulated environments. We will also discuss the challenges in having a state patchwork of regulations without federal uniformity, as well as the primary challenges for businesses, regulators, and consumers that the FDA should be aware of and address in regulation.
During this presentation, we have the opportunity to highlight the work our members are doing to ensure that their products – whether hemp-based or with higher levels of THC – are produced according to stringent safety and quality standards. If you have information about your company’s operations that you feel would be helpful to incorporate into our presentation, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Also, in case you are interested in watching our presentation and/or the testimony or presentations of other stakeholders, the FDA will provide a live webcast of the hearing. You can join the hearing via the webcast, which will take place from 8:00am to 6:00pm ET on May 31, here. Mark your calendars!
